Grokking The Vitality of Life

The Shamyn's Basic Food Medicines

The term "shamyn" is used variously. In my definition, shamynic practices involve the regulation and transformation of human life and human society through the use of alternate states of cosciousness by means of which specialist practitioners are held to communicate with a mode of reality alternative to, and more fundamental than, the world of everyday experience. A shaman is a teacher, a healer, a visionary, Hir gifts of cosmic zight allow for deeper and clearer insights.

Shamanic Food Medicines from the Chicken Whisperer

Milk and Eggs

The Horrendous Truth about Eggs

About 95 percent of the nation's eggs are produced at caged-hen egg farms. ALERT to the public, to a practice that is cruel and neglectful. 100,000's of chickens confined to small wire cages.
Hen corpses lying in cages with live hens, many had fallen into deep manure pits or others with their heads apparently caught in wire cages.

The average physician, when he has an anemic patient, pre-scribes iron as a tonic. In theory, this is correct because the patient is deficient in iron; practically, it is incorrect because the iron he prescribes is inorganic, and as the system of man has no power to absorb and make use of inorganic substances, as has the plant, there can be no direct benefit from the use of inorganic iron, though there may be an indirect action, through its affinity to organic iron.

The food scientist, knowing that the system of an anemic person. is in need of iron, does not prescribe an inorganic substance of questionable value, but prescribes food known to contain an abundance of organic iron, which may be absorbed by the system, and a gradual improvement will commence and ultimate recovery assured through rebuilding the system and supplying it with the lacking elements. One of the foods most dearly indicated in such cases, and containing the greatest amount of iron, is the apple; this may be taken in any style; raw between meals, stewed or baked at bed time, but without sugar or cream.

Spinach also contains much iron and may be boiled and served with the regular noon or evening meals as a vegetable. Other food rich in cell salts, such as whole wheat bread, milk, eggs, fish etc. should be served with it.

As previously stated, one of the most important medicines indicated in both anemic and tubercular cases, is iron; the vegetables in which this is found in its highest organic form are, lettuce, spinach, Swiss chard, and in some slight degree, in cabbage. We also find this mineral element in some form in the potato, but to get its benefit the potato must be eaten as a whole because the mineral is found in the outer covering.

The anemic is not deficient only in the iron element as so generally believed by the medical profession, he is even more lacking in phosphoric acid; it is this deficiency which so often causes a gradual weakening of the lungs; this may, and often does, develop into tuberculosis.

In the treatment of these cases dietetically we are liable to fail if we consider all milk under one classification, there is milk and milk, one rich in phosphoric acid while another is decidedly poor. Milk may pass the official test for germ life and still be low in its phosphoric acid content. In fact, some milk is as low as .12 per cent while good milk may be as rich as .48 per cent in phosphoric acid.

Likewise with eggs; to all appearance they may be fresh and rich in food value, while as an actual fact they are almost worthless as a food in these cases where a richness in mineral elements is required.

Why is this?

Experiments carried on at our farm have demonstrated the reason. The cow to be healthy, should have as its feed: fresh grass in Summer and as late in Fall as possible. This is always rich in all the organic mineral elements so essential to the health of the cow, and in the production of milk with a full quota of these elements; this green food must be reinforced with other feed, consisting of a combination of corn, wheat bran, whole oats, sugar feed and oil meal.

It must be remembered that unlike the food to which man is accustomed, it is not the inner, fine, starchy matter that can be fed the cow but the whole of the grain, including all of the outer covering which is full of the organic elements. These grains, rich in the life principle or vitamine, nuclein and mineral elements are the basic food of the animal, while the grasses, equally rich in vitamin and organic elements, serve as vegetables.

Food of this nature given the animal will produce a milk high in the contents of vitamin, organic salts, phosphoric acid etc. and when this is prescribed for sufferers from anemia or tuberculosis, there will be an immediate absorption of these necessary elements and a gradual improvement will commence, provided, of course, common sense is exercised in bathing, breathing, and physical exertion.

The organic salts, vitamin and phosphorus are actual, vital, energetic medicines in the true sense, and not mere substitutes such as are inorganic iron, salts and phosphorus usually prescribed.

There is another side to this question and one which vitally concerns not only the Dietitian, but all physicians who treat cases of this nature and who have the welfare of the people at heart. This has to do with the class of milk, passed by inspectors as of good quality but actually possessing very little food value.

We have considered the healthy milk and the reason for it; consideration will now be given to the other kind, milk which has failed to nourish those greatly in need of super-nourishment, as well as the means of indirectly causing countless deaths.

The average owner of cows, looking only to the profit he can derive from his stock, and totally ignorant of the results follow-ing the use of milk deficient in the food elements, or possibly caring little if he did know, will not go to the expense of buying the high priced, carefully balanced basic foods, but purchases the by-products from breweries, which can be obtained so abundantly and cheaply.

These grains have gone through a process of fermentation and thereby have been robbed of practically all the food value, of the vitamin, nuclein and mineral elements.

Once the brewer has extracted all the elements he can, it becomes so much waste to him and he must rid himself of it, he is therefore willing to sell very cheaply. The large feed houses throughout the country buy this material and in turn sell it to retail houses and mills, these again sell it to the farmer. The farmer finds it a cheap food, one that actually increases his milk supply, thereby giving him a better profit on his investments. His milk passes both the butter fat and germ test and is labelled as healthy milk, fit as food for both the sick and the well.

Herein is the secret why milk often fails as a builder in those diseases where it is indicated as the proper food and correct medicine. The cows being fed on feed which has been robbed of practically all its vital or organic salts, cannot by any stretch of the imagination, be supposed able to give milk containing the necessary elements, hence such who take the milk with the expectation of being built up, or rejuvenated, through its use, are sadly disappointed.

This is not a theory, it is fact; personally demonstrated on our farms, in this manner: Buying the finest Guernsey cows, we had them on test for Advance Registration, fed them on brewer's grain and hay, and our milk not only passed the test as to the necessary amount of fat, but also as to quantity of milk. In other words, the milk was considered healthy, a desirable food, and all the difference that could be noted was, the cows did not show as healthy a condition as under correctly balanced rations. That is, though healthy in so far as tests could demonstrate, they were not as lively as when fed whole grain food.

Noting this, we changed the food, gave them either hay in Winter, or pasture in Summer, and instead of the deficient brewer's grain, a mixture of the whole corn (ground), bran, oats, sugar feed and oil meal, and the sleek appearance gradually returned and more life shown. However, under test the milk did not show any great increase in butter fat content, nor any considerably greater amount of milk.

Thus, under the two feedings and under the present method of testing, one kind of milk was as desirable as the other for food, though actually one class of milk was totally unfit, barely passable as a drink, and would have been a detriment to either an anemic or consumptive, because it gave the system much labor to digest it, without adding much building material; while the other milk was a true food, builder and medicine.

This is the reason so many sufferers have taken quantities of milk daily without the least improvement in their condition. These being facts, immediate changes should be made in the system of testing milk, whereby we may learn whether it is rich in butter fat, vitamin and the mineral contents. Unless we do this we will continue to add countless victims to our list of those resulting from taking food which adds the burden of digestion and elimination to the system without giving commensurate nourishment in return.

Normal milk, that is, milk containing all the elements it should, is the most perfectly balanced building food known to man; because it contains all of the seventeen organic mineral elements in their correct proportion, all the elements of food required by man; and at the same time is a neutralizer to an acid system,

Normal milk contains rather more of the elements of potassium and calcium than necessary to the fully matured and healthy man, and because of this and to offset it, the use of fruits deficient in these elements, should be eaten in conjunction with the taking of milk, though these must not be eaten with the milk, but between the taking of it.

Consumptives should eat plenty of apples and oranges between the drinking of milk, and vegetables rich in iron and nervines with the meals.

Although we have mentioned milk only in connection with the rebuilding of anemics and consumptives, it is indicated in many other conditions, especially in those where starved brain and nerves and where weakened generative organs are the cause of the trouble.

Eggs, like milk, are both food and medicine. They contain, in the white, an almost pure albumen; while the yolk, fat, phosphorus and sulphur.

All these are medicines to the weakened system; the fats and albumen are builders while the phosphorus is an absolute essential in the treatment of anemia, tuberculosis, all wasting diseases and neurasthenic conditions.

The sulphur is essential in the treatment of tuberculosis and in all other conditions where the cause is supposed to be found in germ life.

In the use of eggs either as a food or medicine certain results must be guarded against; these are the danger of creating sulphuric and sulphorous acid as well as phosphoric acid. These, in limited quantities, are curative in their nature, but if they accumulate beyond the normal amount they become dangerous to health. This accumulation may be avoided if the counter acids be supplied in the form of fruits and vegetables.

The rules governing the use of eggs in the dietary are like those which regulate the taking of milk; all fruits between the eating of the eggs, all vegetables served with them. Fruit to be eaten before retiring and on arising.

In all conditions where the stomach is found much weakened and the digestive power below the average, the egg diet must be started very gradually, otherwise there is a tendency to create gas, distending the stomach and intestines, this in turn creating other digestive and assimilative trouble. When gas accumulates after the eating of eggs it must be dispelled by eating plenty of fruit.

Much of the trouble may be avoided by eating no eggs before they are at least three days old, and never after they are three weeks. Before they are three days old, their mineral contents are not fully organized. After three weeks, these elements begin to disorganize.

In all conditions where the digestive power is extremely weak, but one yolk should be taken with every six whites and even then the whites should be well beaten. The stomach may also be prepared to receive and digest them by giving it a few leaves of crisp lettuce on which has been added a little good apple vinegar, one-half hour before the eggs are served.

Like milk, eggs are of two classes;
those forming good food, and those unfit for use.

During the war we were told to save all scraps and feed them to chickens, that any food fit for human consumption should not be fed to them. If these instructions were carried out, the farmer fed only waste scraps, unfit for table use, to his fowls and this may have been one of the reasons why the fearful epidemic raged during. the latter period of the war.

All who have experimented with poultry know it is utterly impossible to raise chickens, and just as futile to maintain the health of the flock, if the food given them is not clean and fresh enough for human consumption.

Time and again the test has been made of feeding fowls principally on stale white bread. This tends to fatten fowls for a time, but gradually a breaking down process results and the fowls become what may be termed consumptives.

Unless the food supplied chickens is in correct proportion, disease results, moreover, it is utterly impossible for the eggs to contain the correct elements of food if the material containing these be not fed the fowls in like proportion. The result is, if we rob the fowl of its correct and healthy food, we will most assuredly rob the egg of the nutriment and proper constituents, and instead of it being a splendid building food it actually is a source of danger, because it will be un-healthy, unbalanced, deficient in nutriment, containing too much of the acid and gas forming material.

Because of this the egg has found so much disfavor among those who should consider it their best food, and considering the universal system of wrong feeding of both cows and fowls, we should not wonder why these foods, so necessary in the treatment of wasting diseases, fail to do that which chemistry says they should.

The greatest reason for failure in the treatment of tuberculosis, anemia and like diseases with diet, is because of food not containing the elements which it is supposed to, and should contain; in the wrong combination of these with other foods, principally the fruits, and in not recognizing the danger line in prescribing food medicines.

Milk is nature's most potent medicine for all wasting diseases, but if it is robbed of its medicinal elements it cannot bring good results any more than one would expect to see any great improvement in a case where the physician prescribed Hydrastis for some abnormal condition of the stomach and the patient, instead of taking the number of drops indicated, were simply to flavor the water with a few drops and take this dilution instead of the full strength of the medicine.
Milk without its full quota of nutriment and vital content is just like the diluted medicine except it requires greater effort on the part of the digestive and eliminating organism to take care of it.

Milk consists of carbohydrates in the form of milk sugar, hydrocarbons in the form of fat, protein in the form of casein (the most powerful nerve and brain builder known to science), the mineral elements, principally potassium, iron, sodium, lime, magnesium and other salts. Of these salts the iron and phos-phorus are of greatest importance. Besides the food and the mineral elements which we term super-food elements, milk and all dairy products are rich in the life principle vitamin.

That the benefit of the vitamin, albumen and casein be obtained, it should be taken in the natural, unboiled state. Cook-ing, even slightly heating, will partly destroy the vitamine in milk, eggs and dairy products.

In all wasting diseases and those conditions which cannot be classed as wasting, but in which there is a low state of vitality, it is the iron, phosphorus and potassium which acts as builders in helping to rebuild the wasted tissues and restore the vital power. Unless we can accomplish this rebuilding, we cannot establish an equilibrium, and a normal, healthy, virile state is impossible. Milk Contains all of these necessary elements, therefore is the natural, logical remedy.

People universally believe tuberculosis a germ disease, instead of what it actually is; a condition, a low state of vitality being the base. They cannot yet comprehend that when the system is fortified with vital power, and the correct amount of true foods consumed, supplying the system with all the necessary elements, no amount of germs will be able to make any headway against such.

Neither germs or bacteria are the actual cause of disease, but on the contrary, a low state of vitality will allow the resisting forces to become so weak that germs which in health are natural, become the enemies and invade the system, producing disease.

In the body of man there are millions of valiant soldiers ever ready to battle against any enemy that may attempt an attack; these soldiers are the corpuscles in the blood, and the power behind them is the organic phosphoric compound which we call nuclein.

When these little soldiers are fully supplied with the phosphorus compound they are able to resist any attack of the enemy disease, and invasion is impossible. It is because of this that men and women have been able to be in the midst of the world's worst plagues and pass through them in safety. If these little soldier-workers are not supplied with sufficient phosphorus, then like the ill-fed army that has to fight against a well nourished one, they wage a losing battle.

Let all clearly understand the enemy is always at hand. Examine the throat of a healthy man, woman or child and one will find the germs of Diphtheria, but of this nothing is thought, it is, actually a normal state because these germs act as scavengers. But the the moment the vital forces fall below a certain stage the instant the phosphoric contents of the blood corpuscles is below normal, that moment these scavengers may become the enemy invaders and produce the disease. In other words, the Hun on the outlet who may be a willing worker while the master is strong, becomes the invader, conqueror and destroyer when the master loses his strength.

Contrary to what one might suppose, it is not difficult to supply the necessary mineral elements; the phosphorus, iron and potassium. All we need to do is to compose the menu of healthy, natural, complete foods, and refuse to partake of those which have been robbed of their vitalizing principles.

Every time we buy white bread, buns and sweet cakes, every time we accept white rice, polished barley and denatured corn meal, we act the traitor to this army of little soldiers; we give them a stone when they ask for bread, and then expect them to fight the invading enemy. We give them starch when they ask for food that contains phosphorus, potassium, iron and the fourteen other cell salts essential to their life and energy.

Every time the housewife or cook boils a vegetable and throws aside the water in which they are boiled, she wastes the actual food which these workers require in their fight to maintain health and strength.

Whenever a potato is peeled and the peelings thrown away or fed to the hogs, the hogs are fed and the army of workers starved.

When we boil milk or eggs, we coagulate the albumen and destroy the vitamine, thus robbing the workers of the food which would give them vital power.

In feeding hogs on brewer's grain and other offal, instead of sour milk and grain feeds, we perpetuate a robbery on society, because we sell the hogs as good food when in fact it is not fit for human consumption, the necessary food elements being lacking.

When the skin is removed from the apple, pear or other fruit and discarded as unfit to eat, we rob ourselves of the active food value which is essential to health and vital energy.

The chemist who would take an herb and macerate it, filter it and throw away the tincture, keeping the dregs as medicine, would be considered ignorant and unfit to serve his vocation, but throughout the world countless housewives are daily stewing fruits, vegetables and all manner of other foods, draining the water wherein boiled and throwing it away as of no value, keeping the refuse or waste and serving it as food.

Introducing Nattokinase

An Exciting Breakthrough for Circulatory Health

Nattokinase was discovered in 1980 by Doctor Hiroyuki Sumi, who was completing his chemistry degree at the Chicago University Medical School. He was testing 173 different foods for their ability to promote healthy circulation, and nattokinase did the job better than any of the other substances he was testing.

Since that time, additional research has been done on nattokinase, including 17 published studies in Japan and here in the U.S. The results have been very exciting, to say the least. But to fully understand the significance of nattokinase, you need to first understand the impact healthy blood flow has on your entire body.

Normal Blood Flow is the Key to Overall Health

Healthy blood flow affects your circulation, blood pressure, and entire body. That's because blood is the transport vehicle that delivers nutrients and oxygen to every cell in your body, carries antibodies where needed, sends the heat in your body out to your skin, and excretes waste products from your body. You cannot be truly healthy without a healthy blood flow.

But here's the challenge. As you age, all of the enzymes in your body may begin to decline—including the enzymes that facilitate healthy blood flow by supporting normal clotting. That's why nattokinase, with its ability to help promote healthy circulation, is such a promising breakthrough.

"Healthy Blood Clotting 101"

Blood clotting is a normal and necessary process. It's what stops the bleeding if you cut your finger, or suffer from any type of injury.

Your body produces several compounds that make blood clots, one of the most important of which is fibrin. Fibrin is made up of sticky protein fibers which look a little bit like a tangled spider's web. Fibrin's job is to stick to the blood vessel walls and act like a net, forming a lump or plug that stops the bleeding.

Fibrin is also what determines the viscosity, or thickness, of blood throughout your entire circulatory systems. Normal fibrin levels will give you normal blood flow.

There's Only One Enzyme in the Human Body that Breaks Down Fibrin While your body makes several compounds that help promote normal blood clotting, it only produces one enzyme—called plasmin—that dissolves and breaks down fibrin. Remember, fibrin is what's forming a “web” that stops blood from flowing—so by breaking down fibrin, plasmin helps to keep your blood flowing normally.

Your body produces plasmin all throughout your circulatory system—in the endothelial cells that line the interior walls of arteries, veins, and lymph vessels. But unfortunately, plasmin production often declines with age.

Here's Where Nattokinase Comes In

Since plasmin production slows down as you age, it would seem logical that you would want to deliver more plasmin to your body. There's no such thing as a plasmin supplement, but that's where nattokinase comes in.

Nattokinase works to support healthy circulation in two different ways. First off, nattokinase resembles plasmin, so it can break down fibrin directly. Secondly, nattokinase enhances your body's natural production of plasmin, which also helps to break down fibrin.

In a nutshell, Nattokinase:
  • Supports normal circulation, blood flow, and blood viscosity (thickness)
  • Supports your body's normal blood-clotting mechanism
  • Supports your body's production of plasmin, which reduces fibrin
  • Helps to maintain normal blood pressure levels

This little-known "Japanese Wonder" supports healthy circulation, blood pressure, and overall health.

Demand for Organic Foods Soaring

By RICK CALLAHAN,
Dairy cows munch lazily on a grassy hilltop overlooking Traders Point Creamery as 23-year-old Marc Murnane strides into the organic creamery's store in search of chocolate milk — lots of it.

In short order, he loads 12 one-quart bottles, at $3.50 each, into a box bound for Chicago, where his girlfriend's father is among the growing number of Americans who've developed a taste for organic foods.

"He just loves the chocolate milk — and it really is the best stuff I've ever had," Murnane says, describing the rich blend of sweet milk from grass-fed cows, organic sugar and cocoa.

The farm northwest of Indianapolis is part of a nationwide move to put organic foods in consumers' reach.

Nationwide, the market for organic foods has soared from $3.57 billion in 1997 to $10.38 billion in 2003, according to Organic Trade Association. The group predicts sales will reach $14.5 billion by the end of 2005 as Americans buy everything from radishes to beef grown without conventional pesticides and fertilizers, biotechnology, antibiotics or growth hormones.

Indiana was late to join the organic food movement, which arose in the 1960s in response to modern chemical farming, but the state is starting to make up lost ground, said Cissy Bowman, executive director of Indiana Certified Organic, LLC.

As the state's only government-approved organic certifier, she has given the stamp of approval to more than 50 Hoosier organic farms and expects that to double this year.

Herself an organic farmer, Bowman said the organic market has undergone incredible growth since she began raising organic vegetables 20 years ago on six acres near the Hendricks County town of Clayton.

"Any food you can think of, you can buy an organic version now. It's not just that bag of whole wheat flour on the store shelf anymore," she said.

Traders Point Creamery delivers to about 70 area stores, with weekly shipments to Chicago-area stores, but demand often outpaces supply, particularly during the winter and summer.

"The cows can't keep up. We sell pretty much everything we produce," said David Robb, the creamery's manager of business development.

Cathy Greene, an agricultural economist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Economic Research Service, said the retail market for organic foods continues to grow about 20 percent each year.

Most people buy organic out of health concerns, she said. Some want to support environmentally friendly farms, but for others, it's a quest for food with superior taste and nutrition.

"Whether the food tastes better or not is kind of subjective, but whether it's more nutritious is something researchers are just starting to study," Greene said.

According to the USDA, certified organic cropland in the United States grew nearly 75 percent between 1997 and 2001, the last year for which figures are available, and accounted for more than 2.3 million acres in 2001.

The USDA found an estimated 4,175 acres of certified organic cropland in Indiana in 2001, but Bowman said the 54 organic farms she's certified in the state account for only about 2,370 acres.

Barbara Haumann, a senior writer with the Organic Trade Association, said there is no clear gauge of the nation's organic agriculture industry. "The numbers are quite hazy," she said. "The government just needs to do some better tracking."

Although organic foods can cost two to three times more than their conventionally raised alternatives, Corinne Alexander, a Purdue University assistant professor of agricultural economics, said people, herself included, are willing to pay.

"I like the idea that right now the organic farmers are being rewarded with premium prices for their hard work. It's really backbreaking work," she said.

Traders Point Creamery's 140 acres of pastures are planted with a mix of grasses and meadow plants that make its milk superior to that produced by grain-fed cows, said Robb.

The pastures are enriched with natural compost and by tilling under cover crops. The nutrient-rich droppings from the 60 Brown Swiss dairy cows also help green the fields, he said.

The fields thrive, Robb said, because they work in concert with nature. "The soil is a really a living entity, and chemicals kill all the good things in the soil when what we really need to be doing is stimulating those," he said.

Chelation Therapy

Chelation (pronounced key-lay-shun) is a chemical reaction that results in a bond being formed between a metal ion and an organic (i.e., carbon-based made mostly of carbon) molecule. The resulting complex, metal bound to molecule, is called a "chelate" and contains one or more rings of atoms in which the metal ion is so firmly bound it cannot escape. This allows the metal ion to be transported in the same manner as a prisoner, first handcuffed, then moved from one location to another.

In the presence of aging and disease, the cells' ability to move metal ions through the system and eliminate them when they are in excess becomes progressively impaired. This is especially true for calcium.

Calcium has vital functions in the human body. Without calcium, teeth and bones could not exist. Nevertheless, as the body ages, lipid peroxidation damages the walls of the arterial tree which is repaired leaving a scar. Then calcium and oxidized cholesterol are incorporated into the resulting scar tissue.

There are several known, and easily avoided, risk factors at work in the creation of arteriosclerosis. Lipid peroxidation begins the inflammatory process in the wall of the artery and is facilitated by the presence of:

  • (1) polyunsaturated fatty acids (present in many "junk-foods"),
  • (2) oxidized cholesterol (from cooked, i.e., pasteurized, milk and other animal foods cooked in open air),
  • (3) the relative absence of antioxidants, such as vitamins A, C and E, and
  • (4) high levels of homocysteine (a condition easily prevented with vitamins B6, B12 and folate). Tobacco smoke drains the body's resources of antioxidants, particularly vitamin C, and further accelerates arteriosclerosis.

If you know and apply these facts from an early age, there is no reason for arteriosclerosis to develop in your body. "Hardening of the arteries" is not an inevitable disease of aging, as you have been led to believe; it is a disease of bad habits. To know and apply these facts, you have to be willing to think for yourself and ah, there is the reason arteriosclerosis will continue to kill people. Maybe the good do die young but so do the uninformed and dogmatic.

As the years pass, calcium deposits build up, and in association with cholesterol, calcified plaques and atherosclerotic plaques form, lining the arterial vessels. When calcium predominates, this process is called "hardening of the arteries" or arteriosclerosis, and when cholesterol predominates it is called "atherosclerosis." The exact content of the plaques is determined by the individual's diet, antioxidant intake and duration of the process. Regardless of where on the arterio-/athero- sclerotic continuum any particular individual falls, the result is the same: less and less fresh oxygen delivered to the tissues of the body.

It once was thought this process began in middle or old age. It is now known to begin in childhood in many people. The severity of this life-long process is determined by genetics, level of exercise and dietary habits. By age 21, many individuals have arterial disease, easily recognized at surgery or autopsy.

This is a disease of modern civilization. Never before have people so young had arteriosclerosis. As recently as the year 1900, heart disease was very rare. It may be that airborne industrial pollutants, as well as herbicides, pesticides and preservatives in our food, have a lot to do with arterio-/athero-sclerosis.

The cholesterol content of these plaques can be handled by shifting to a no-fat, high-fiber diet. Plaques actually decrease in size, and the cholesterol content can eventually disappear. Lipid peroxidation itself can be halted by the liberal intake of antioxidants such as Beta-carotene (the precursor of vitamin A), mixed tocopherols (vitamin E) and vitamin C, so no further damage is caused to the arterial tree.

The calcium content of the scar-plaques already present is another matter. Diet and pure water have little effect on it. Therefore, if you want to restore your health to a completely youthful condition, you are facing a real challenge with arteriosclerosis.

The list of problems that can be caused by artery disease is truly impressive, but it should not be surprising that it is so extensive given that a fresh supply of oxygenated blood is absolutely necessary for proper functioning in any organ. Even diseases that are more complicated, in that they have causes other than decreased blood flow, are made worse by arterial disease.

A prime example is Alzheimer's Disease. True Alzheimer's Disease is mimicked by simple aterio-/athero-sclerosis of the arteries and arterioles supplying the brain. Diabetes is known to be made worse by poor blood flow to the pancreas, and poor blood supply also can cause decreased output of digestive enzymes from the exocrine part of the pancreas, causing incomplete digestion.

Decreased blood supply to the kidneys results in the inappropriate release of angiotensin by the kidneys, inducing hypertension throughout the vascular tree. The joints, particularly the joints of the low back, react with inflammation and pain to decreasing blood flow and this, along with the degeneration of ligament tissue and disc disease, is responsible for the so-called "low back syndrome."

Arterio-/athero-sclerosis plays a big part in the cause of arthritis throughout the body. The effect of this process on the heart is angina (chest pain originating in the heart) and eventually infarction and death. Poor blood supply to the stomach and small intestines results in poor digestion. Poor blood supply to the colon causes slowing of the colon with resulting colon disease.

The effect on the extremities is cold hands and feet, and in an advanced case, gangrene of the extremities can result. Impotence can be caused by decreased blood flow to the penis due to clogged arterioles. Frigidity can be caused by decreased blood flow to the pelvis. Cancer is known to be accelerated by decreased blood flow to the affected tissues. When blood flow is decreased to the immunocompetent cells in the bone marrow and spleen, the immune system itself is weakened.

The list of pains, aches, discomforts and diseases caused, or made worse by, arterio-/athero-sclerosis goes on and on. The above discussion is not complete and could not be made complete unless expanded to book size. Fortunately, there is a way to deal with arteriosclerosis. The answer is chelation.

Prevention of Arteriosclerosis: Oral Chelation

An ounce of prevention certainly is worth a pound of cure. The oral chelating agents serve admirably to prevent or halt the progression of arteriosclerosis, but do little to reverse the disease once it is present. You probably already are taking one of the oral chelating agents, vitamin C. This is an excellent oral chelating agent and also easily available. Also, fresh vegetables are loaded with other natural and effective chelating agents.

Exercise-generated Chelation

Lactic acid, produced from exercise, is an excellent chelating agent. It is the metabolic byproduct of sustained, vigorous muscle contraction. To get this chelating agent, you must exercise regularly. Exercise also increases your body's ability to reduce, and thus neutralize, free radicals, which are at the heart of degenerative diseases.

There is a host of more exotic substances (Anginin, Unithol, Vaso Elastin, DMS, NTA, Hexopal Forte, Syntrival) that I think you should ignore, since they are not readily available, they are expensive, and the agents already easily available to you are excellent.

Reversal of the Effects of Arteriosclerosis by Intravenous Chelation

In distinction to the oral chelating agents that serve to prevent arteriosclerosis, intravenous chelation has been shown to actually reverse the effects of the disease. The agent used is Ethylene-diamine-tetra-acetic Acid, also known as "EDTA," sold commercially as Sodium Edetate.

EDTA is a synthetic amino acid. The usual dose is 2000-3000 mg. (adjusted to body weight, age, and kidney function) added to 500 ml. of "carrier solution" sterile water with a mixture of vitamins and minerals. Most chelation doctors add vitamin C along with B vitamins, bicarbonate and magnesium.

The solution is infused slowly, one drop per second, and one treatment requires about three hours. The prisoner (calcium) is moved out of the body using the sheriff's handcuffs (EDTA). The half life of EDTA in the body is one hour; i.e., one-half is removed (filtered into the urine) after one hour, another half of what is left is removed after one more hour, etc. Within 24 hours 99% of the EDTA is gone from the body, and you are left with only the therapeutic benefit.

In addition, to the transitory transport of calcium, many other metal ions are transported and rearranged, which brings up the subject of how EDTA works. In the early days of EDTA therapy, physicians had no idea how it worked. As physicians do, they reached for the nearest reasonable explanation. They said it decalcified the walls of arteries clogged with arterio-/athero-sclerotic plaque, a kind of chemical ROTO-ROOTER ®. This is now known not to be the only benefit of EDTA, even though decalcification of plaques does occur. The action of EDTA is more complex than the simple-minded comparison with a ROTO-ROOTER can reflect.

To be sure, the action of EDTA is to increase blood flow throughout the body. One of the hallmarks of aging is decreased blood flow to all the organs. It has been shown conclusively: EDTA restores this lost blood flow. How can this happen, if EDTA is not a "ROTO-ROOTER?"

Delivery of oxygen to cells is not explainable by merely comparing the circulatory system to a set of pipes. Blood vessels are living organs, not pipes. Once oxygen is delivered to a cell there is still the matter of how efficiently it can be used. EDTA, as it turns out, operates at all these levels. Here are the effects of EDTA, the final manifestation of which is the healing of degenerative diseases of many kinds.

  • 1. EDTA lowers blood calcium and thus stimulates the production of parathormone from the parathyroid glands. This mild pulse of parathormone is responsible for the removal of calcium from abnormal locations (such as arteries) and the deposition of calcium in locations (such as bones) where it should be. This accounts for the mild recalcification of osteoporotic bones seen with EDTA.
  • 2. EDTA stimulates the enlargement of small vessels, so that they serve the purpose of collateral circulation around a blockage, rendering the blockage irrelevant.
  • 3. EDTA controls free radical damage due to lipid peroxidation by serving as a powerful antioxidant.
  • 4. EDTA removes abnormally located metal ions, such as copper and iron, that accumulate with age.
  • 5. EDTA removes lead, cadmium, aluminum, mercury and other metals, restoring enzyme systems to their proper functions.
  • 6. EDTA enhances the integrity of cellular and mitochondrial membranes.
  • 7. EDTA helps reestablish prostaglandin hormone balance. Prostaglandins, among other things, are responsible for the balancing act between contraction and relaxation of arterial walls and between clotting and the free flow of blood. Prostaglandins are produced from fatty acids, therefore lipid peroxidation upsets the balance of these vital hormones. EDTA chelates out the catalyzing metallic co-enzymes and thus inhibits lipid peroxidation, also serving the same function as an antioxidant.
  • 8. EDTA reduces the tendency of platelets to cause coagulation too readily. This tends to prevent inappropriate thrombosis, which blocks coronary arteries during a heart attack.
  • 9. EDTA increases tissue flexibility by uncoupling age-related cross-linkages that are responsible for loss of skin tone and for wrinkling.

I recommend any individual over the age of forty to have a series of twenty EDTA treatments, followed by six to twelve per year for maintenance after that, simply to restore youthful vitality lost due to aging and arteriosclerosis. A person who is already symptomatic with a cardiovascular disease will require more than twenty treatments. We look for the end of troublesome symptoms such as chest pain, leg pain, transient dizziness, intellectual impairment, and fatigue all attributable to loss of blood flow to vital organs to know when there have been enough treatments. A good rule of thumb to estimate the maximum number of treatments needed is one treatment for every year of your age, minus 20, but this is only a rough estimate.

You should expect to pay $90-120 per treatment, which admittedly is a nice piece of change. Most people would spend more money on a new car than on their health, so you have to ask yourself how much your health is worth. In the long run, the money you spend on chelation should more than repay itself in health, vitality and the absence of illness. If this were not so, I would not recommend it to you, and I would not be a chelation therapist. The number of physicians who carry out this procedure is relatively small, but growing rapidly a few hundred in the U.S. at present. This relative unavailability is surprising, given the great benefits available through this relatively inexpensive, extremely safe treatment.

A Short History of EDTA

EDTA was developed in Germany in the early 1930s as a substitute for citric acid. Citric acid was produced in England and used by Germany for binding mordant dyes. The development of EDTA was part of Germany's effort to become independent of other countries. No one dreamed at the time that it would ever have a medical use. It has been available in the U.S. for medical purposes since 1948. The controversy has been raging since then, and it is not going away, much to the chagrin of the medical/pharmaceutical complex.

Background Information

Many physicians who administer EDTA are people who have benefited from it themselves, many of whom have been brought back from death's door, most commonly from heart disease. As I write this, I am experiencing the absence of a severe low back pain condition, which had been with me for thirteen years, relief I attribute to EDTA! Also my hearing, which was beginning to fail, has cleared up dramatically, and my kids are now puzzled that I can hear them from the other room.

I was introduced to EDTA by an 84-year-old former surgeon, Martin Weiss, M.D., who had been given a death sentence by a cardiovascular surgeon at age 67 unless he would immediately undergo coronary bypass. He knew the dangers of surgery and looked around for an alternative. He learned of EDTA and through treatment became free of heart disease without the risk of anesthesia or surgery. He then decided to offer EDTA to his patients.

Many physicians are closet chelators who perform chelations on themselves and their loved ones and relatives, but do not offer it to the general public because of the threat of condemnation by the medical community. These physicians are severely constrained by their need to be accepted by their peers. The freedoms we enjoy in America were not won by such people.

Medical Politics

One can speculate about why this treatment is not more well-known and commonly administered in modern medicine in the U.S. It is interesting to observe, the patent on EDTA ran out in 1948, and it is therefore very inexpensive, because it can be produced by any drug company and must therefore face free market competition. It hardly matters how effective any drug is, when the patent expires, you probably will not hear much more about it. Drug companies have no fortune to make and thus no motivation to advertise EDTA to doctors. This kind of advertisement, believe it or not, is the most important factor determining which drugs many doctors prescribe, because it is this advertising doctors rely on for the bulk of their "continuing education."

Also, if EDTA became commonly used, there would be a lot of cardiovascular surgeons looking for something else to do, as EDTA is a reasonably priced (cost: $2,000-4000), safe, nonsurgical alternative to balloon angioplasty (cost: around $15,000), and coronary bypass operations (cost: in the range of $50,000!).

Many of these surgeons make over two million dollars per year doing drastic procedures for illnesses which could have been prevented with oral chelation, and many even most of which can still be treated successfully with EDTA. If these surgeons go out of business so does a section of hospital surgery suites and with those, many hospitals. The economic phalanx lined up against chelation therapy is solid and deep.

It is interesting to note a recent study in a publication called Medical Care (1995;33(7):715-728). This study reports that coronary bypass surgery is 96% more likely to be recommended when the patient is covered by private insurance versus Medicare (which pays less), and 117% more likely to be recommended versus the noninsured (which pays even less).

I recently attended the thirty year reunion at the university where I took my premed training. There I met an old friend who had become a vascular surgeon. This man was a wonderful student who never made less than an "A" on any test. I thought that, of all people, Ed would have looked over the relevant studies and would have a well-thought-out opinion for or against bypass surgery.

So, I asked him, "Ed, what do you think of bypass surgery now? Is that good for people? Should we be doing that to people?" His reply: "It pays the bills!" And that was it. I could not persuade him to say anything more about the matter. He did offer that he was looking forward to an early retirement, but he had no more to say about bypass surgery.

One can only speculate about why the mass consciousness of doctors is not simply neutral to EDTA, but is, instead, openly hostile and disparaging. Otherwise open-minded docs will say absurd things like "I don't know anything about it except it is no good!" How can you know it is no good, if you know nothing about it? My guess is: it is a combination of unconsciousness, ignorance and pure capitalism on the part of both pharmaceutical companies and medical practitioners.

Many courageous physicians have faced censure from medical societies, loss of hospital privileges, and worse for administration of this incredibly effective and safe treatment. Those days are coming to an end, however, because of the massive evidence which has accumulated to validate the safety and effectiveness of EDTA and the power of ACAM, the medical society for chelating doctors.

Nevertheless, we cannot take this therapy for granted. The California Medical Board is striving, right now, 1996, to regulate the use of EDTA to the point that it will not be available for the conditions for which most people need it. The Board is evenly split on whether to do this or not with (predictably) the vascular surgeon on the Board rabidly for suppression of chelation, despite the evidence of its effectiveness.

As one of these rigid, righteous, closed-minded doctors said at a recent board meeting, "As long as chelation therapy was limited to being used by only a few docs, it did not need to be regulated, but now that it is becoming well-known, this ripoff therapy must be suppressed." What he did not say, that is clearly true, is he wants to stamp out the competition to his enormous coronary bypass fees. This meeting was open to the public, and the room was full of hundreds of people whose lives had been saved by chelation, one of whom shouted out "Coronary bypass is the real ripoff!"

Let me quote this surgeon a little more. "If EDTA is so good, let them prove it. Proof is not so hard to get! Let them prove it with controlled, double-blind, placebo studies and then publish these results in the top peer-reviewed journals." He apparently had an attack of attention deficit disorder when these very studies had been presented to the Board only a few minutes before.

Only a few of the thousands of fine studies on EDTA have been published in what were once the distinguished journals of medical research. The reason for this: the pharmaceutical industry bought these journals out with "donations" and advertising dollars years ago. Studies on the uses of EDTA threaten the profits of the pharmaceutical industry with its panoply of patented, toxic, synthetic drugs and the surgical industry with its dangerous unnecessary interventions such as bypass surgery.

These studies simply are not allowed to be published in what were once the best medical journals, but that now are disrespected by doctors who are knowledgeable about the political process behind these publications.

Indeed, the surgical, pharmaceutical and hospital industries would like to stamp out chelation therapy. I am sure some people at MacDonald's would like to outlaw other restaurants and make the Big Mac the required "food" for every person on the planet. Quality meals, like quality medical care, are not served at every standardized outlet.

A Vignette

Ten days ago one of my patients finished his course of chelation therapy. He went back for a visit to his cardiologist, who had recommended angioplasty and who strongly opposes chelation therapy. This man informed my patient that chelation therapy is dangerous, unproven, a financial ripoff and then insisted that my patient get back on his Mevacor (a toxic synthetic drug for lowering cholesterol).

He then mailed to me a nasty little "progress note." A few days later my patient dropped by my office for a chat and pointed out that as a result of chelation therapy his blood pressure is down, his diabetes is under control, his arrythmia is no longer present, and he has a new-found experience of well-being.

When informed by his cardiologist that my fee was a ripoff, my patient reports that he leaned toward that doctor and asked "Just how much does angioplasty cost?" (Answer: $20,000 for a two-hour procedure which typically is a failure versus my fee of less than $2,300 for 25 three-hour chelation treatments which typically are successful.) Almost any chelation therapist can tell you several such stories.

I am proud to be a physician. I studied and worked hard for my degree. The only time I am embarrassed to be a doctor is when I see performances like this one by a colleague. I am embarrassed that this man has the same degree I have. I know better than to hope this doctor will change. The facts do not matter to righteous, closed minds. Things will change, but as a result of people like that growing rich, old, retired, and replaced by a new generation.

Insurance Politics

Insurance companies, including Medicare, will not cover the cost of chelation therapy with EDTA, even though the cost is only around $3,000 compared to $15,000 for angioplasty and $50,000 for a bypass. The excuse is, EDTA is not an "accepted" therapy.

What that actually means is: not accepted by cardiovascular surgeons who compete with chelation therapy and not accepted by the drug industry, which depends on people remaining sick and taking loads of synthetic drugs, and not accepted by the leading medical journals, which have been bought out by the pharmaceutical and surgical industries.

What is most strange, on the surface, is the fact that insurance companies do not cover the costs of chelation, even though they will shell out for coronary bypass which costs fifteen times as much and treats only two, three or four of the hundreds of arteries in the body.

However, if you consider how widespread is the incidence of arterio-/athero-sclerosis, the number of insured people who would need EDTA as a preventive measure is truly astounding, and the cost of covering those people is clearly outside what is possible for any insurance carrier. Perhaps Medicare and the insurance companies have thought rather deeply into what it would cost to cover chelation therapy.

Nevertheless, if you are willing to have your treatment and then sue your insurance company for coverage, you probably will win, provided you present the facts about EDTA clearly. Historically this has been the case. I have a stack of several hundred scientific articles on EDTA, and I am prepared to prove my point in any forum.
